Prediction Markets vs. Polls: Two Different Ways of Measuring Public Belief
Why prediction markets and opinion polls measure fundamentally different things, and why the two are best treated as complements rather than competitors.

Polls and prediction markets are often placed side by side as competing forecasting tools, but they are actually designed to measure different things, and understanding that distinction explains why the two sometimes diverge without either one being simply wrong. A poll asks a sample of people what they believe or intend to do, aggregating stated opinion or intention across a representative cross-section of a population. A prediction market instead asks anyone willing to trade to put money behind their view of the probability of an outcome, aggregating financially incentivized belief across whoever chooses to participate, which is a self-selected group rather than a carefully constructed representative sample.
This difference in who is being measured matters. A well-conducted poll's value comes precisely from its sampling methodology, the deliberate effort to survey a group that reflects the broader population being studied, with margins of error and demographic weighting designed to make the result generalizable. A prediction market has no equivalent sampling guarantee; its participants are whoever chooses to trade, which may skew toward people with a particular interest, expertise, or geographic concentration, and a market's price reflects the aggregated view of that specific, self-selected group rather than a scientifically representative cross-section of the broader public.
At the same time, prediction markets have an advantage polls structurally lack: continuous, real-time updating and a direct financial cost to being wrong. A poll is a snapshot, conducted over a specific window and reported some time after fieldwork concludes, while a prediction market price updates continuously as new information arrives and new trades occur. And because traders are risking real capital, a prediction market can, in principle, incorporate not just what people say they believe but what they are willing to back financially, which can surface information a survey respondent might not think to mention or might answer differently in a low-stakes conversation than they would if money were actually on the line.
Historical comparisons between the two have produced a genuinely mixed picture rather than a clean verdict in either direction. There have been instances where prediction markets appeared to track an eventual outcome more closely than contemporaneous polling, and instances where markets seemed to lag or overreact relative to what polling data suggested. Researchers studying this question generally caution against treating either method as uniformly superior, noting that each has situations where it performs better, often depending on how much genuinely new, tradeable information exists beyond what polling has already captured.
Polling methodology has also faced well-documented challenges around declining response rates and the difficulty of reaching a truly representative sample in a fragmented media environment, challenges that affect the reliability of any individual poll regardless of how it compares to market-based alternatives. Prediction markets face their own distinct vulnerabilities, including thin liquidity in less prominent contracts and the potential for a non-representative trading population to produce a price that reflects a narrow set of views rather than genuinely broad-based information aggregation.
The most useful framing, and the one most forecasting researchers converge on, treats polls and prediction markets as complements rather than substitutes, since each captures a somewhat different signal and each has different failure modes. A careful observer benefits from looking at both: polling data for its methodological rigor around sampling and its ability to break down opinion by demographic group, and prediction market prices for their continuous updating and the discipline that financial stakes impose on participants, understanding that neither one alone is a complete or infallible picture of where an uncertain event is actually headed.
